Special Weather Statement issued August 29 at 3:35PM PDT by NWS Spokane WA
AREAS AFFECTED: Northern Panhandle; Northeast Mountains
DESCRIPTION: At 334 PM PDT, Doppler radar was tracking a cluster of strong thunderstorms along a line extending from 11 miles north of Kootenai to 11 miles south of Nordman. Movement was southeast at 55 mph. HAZARD...Winds in excess of 30 mph and half inch hail. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to outdoor objects is possible. Locations impacted include... Sandpoint, Ponderay, Kootenai, Dover, Colburn, Schweitzer Mountain, and Coolin. This includes the following highways... U.S. Highway 95 in Idaho between mile markers 474 and 489. U.S. Highway 2 in Idaho between mile markers 22 and 23, and between mile markers 27 and 28. U.S. Highway 2 in Washington between mile markers 22 and 23, and between mile markers 27 and 28.
INSTRUCTION: If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with these storms and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with these storms. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle. If on or near Priest Lake or Lake Pend Oreille, get out of the water and move indoors or inside a vehicle. Remember, lightning can strike out to 10 miles from the parent thunderstorm. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Move to safe shelter now! Do not be caught on the water in a thunderstorm.

Condensation is the process which creates clouds, and therefore
it is a crucial process in the water cycle.
Condensation is the change of matter from a state of gas into a state of liquid,
and it happens because water molecules release heat into the atmosphere and
become organized into a more closely packed structure, what we might see as
water droplets.
Water is always present in the air around us as a vapor, but it's too small for
us to see. When water undergoes the process of condensation it becomes organized
into visible water droplets. You've probably seen condensation happen before on the
surface of a cold drink!

The final form taken by a growing cumulus cloud is the
cumulonimbus cloud, which is very tall and dense.
The tower of a cumulonimbus cloud can soar 23 km into the atmosphere, although
most commonly they stop growing at an altitude of 6 km.
Even small cumulonimbus clouds appear very large in comparison to other cloud types.
They can signal the approach of stormy weather, such as thunderstorms or blizzards.
